Middle School Assistant Principal


Full-Time Exempt – 12 Month Employment

Reports to

Head of School

Primary Functions

The Middle Assistant Principal will use leadership, supervisory, and administrative skills to manage all aspects of the day-to-day functioning of the middle school and promote the educational and emotional development of each student

Essential Functions & Accountabilities:

Curriculum and Instruction – Leverages deep knowledge of curriculum, instruction, and assessment to improve student learning

  • Aligns standards, curricula, instructional strategies, and assessment tools
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates rigorous curricula to accelerate learning for all students
  • Provides opportunities and encouragement for staff to increase program expertise
  • Regularly assesses student learning and ensures the provision of specific, timely feedback to teachers and students
  • Regularly uses the results of the student assessment data to identify problems and implement program improvements and/or pacing
  • Supports teachers in using effective instructional strategies to meet students’ diverse learning needs

Student Assessment and Data – Uses data to set high learning goals and increase student achievement

  • Demonstrates ability to understand and analyze data from multiple sources
  • Develops school culture and practices that rely on data to inform adult learning, professional development, and decision making
  • Maintains policies and practices for grading, reporting, and promoting
  • Provides meaningful information to parents and others regarding student progress
  • Uses data to identify student learning trends, set goals, monitor and modify instruction, and increase student achievement
  • Works with staff to systematically identify and respond to at-risk students; making referrals to appropriate school and community agencies when needed

Staff and Community – Develops staff, appropriately shares leadership, and builds strong school communities

  • Builds strong teams, develops leadership capacity among staff, and shares responsibilities appropriately
  • Develops and maintains positive staff morale
  • Establishes systems that promote learning, collaboration, and communication throughout the school
  • Improves classroom teaching by setting clear expectations and observing, coaching, and evaluating teachers and staff
  • Listens effectively to families, students, and the school community
  • Maintains high visibility in the school
  • Proactively engages the school community around the school’s learning goals
  • Recruits and selects effective teachers
  • Supports the development of all staff: stimulates and retains high performers, mentors early career teachers, challenges low performers to improve, and dismisses poor performers who do not improve

Resources and Operations – Manages resources and operations to improve student learning

  • Aligns youth development and support services around academic goals
  • Allocates and manages budgets and resources effectively in support of learning goals
  • Brings projects to completion
  • Develops and implements systems and processes to ensure effective operations that support student learning
  • Manages time in relation to student learning priorities

Professional Development – Maintains currency in all aspects of job duties

  • Assumes responsibility for his/her own professional growth and development through membership and participation in the affairs of professional organizations, through attendance at regional, state, and national meetings
  • Keeps abreast of changes and developments in the profession by attending professional meetings, reading professional journals, and discussing problems of mutual interest with others in the field

School-wide Responsibilities – Contributes to the effective operation of the school as a whole

  • Assists the Head of School in preparing required compliance reports and organizing for site visits from NYSED or NYC DOE personnel
  • Ensures that personnel and student records are accurate and up-to-date
  • Other assignments may be delegated by the Head of School
  • Oversees school-related committees (such as Student Activities) and field trips
  • Prepares required school reports accurately and efficiently

  • Manage and lead adults in support of the school’s mission
  • Organize tasks, set priorities and meet deadlines, manage multiple tasks
  • Perform research and development activities pertaining to curriculum and instructional programs
  • Plan, organize, develop and conduct a comprehensive teaching and instruction program
  • Provide a motivating and stimulating learning environment
  • Respond appropriately to evaluation and changes in the work setting
  • Work autonomously within school established guidelines and policies
  • Knowledge or ability to use SIS (student information systems) or online learning platforms (Schoology, Google Classroom, PowerSchool, and Canvas)

Required Education and Experience

  • A valid New York State principal’s certificate
  • At least 2 years administrative/supervision experience
  • At least 5 years prior teaching experience in middle school
  • A passion for urban education and a commitment to the school’s mission
  • Demonstrated success working in non-traditional and/or urban school settings
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience with educational technology
  • Willingness to learn and grow professionally

Preferred Education and Experience

  • A valid NYS teaching certificate at the middle school level

Supervisory Responsibility

Middle School Teachers, All Instructional Directors, Family Engagement Coordinator

• Take responsibility for meeting school-wide student performance goals

• Demonstrate gains in the student performance

• Participate in training and presentations about various pedagogical competencies

• Meet professional obligations through efficient work habits such as meeting deadlines, honoring schedules, and collaborating effectively with colleagues

• Perform administrative duties and class coverage as assigned by a supervisor

• All work responsibilities are subject to performance goals and targets established as part of the annual performance planning process

• Provide a positive environment in which students are actively engaged in the learning process to communicate effectively with students, parents, colleagues, and other professors

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. This job's specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This position is full-time, and the hours and workdays are Monday through Friday, from 8:00 to 4:00 pm unless the school will host a school event in which staff is expected to stay.
