Strategic Communications Manager

This person serves as the department's "chief of staff" and is responsible for driving strategic innovation and project management vis-a-vis internal coordination with other departments and cross-cutting programmatic initiative teams. They ensure that we have the right tools, systems and practices in place to deliver high quality, impactful, advocacy-oriented content that furthers the mission to promote philanthropy that serves the public good, is responsive to people and communities with the least wealth and opportunity, and is held accountable to the highest standards of integrity and openness.

Responsibilities include:

Manage communications engagement for major ongoing programmatic initiatives. (50%)

  • Develop and iterate programmatic communications strategy, including messaging/framing, editorial calendar and dissemination plan.
  • Project manage the full cycle of content production, including the editorial approval process and coordination with the marketing/design team, with an eye toward the intersection of the process and engagement goals and timelines.

Serve as primary departmental liaison for strategic coordination with Marketing and Operations to ensure overall organizational external alignment and streamlined infrastructure. (25%)

  • Ensure strategic integration of marketing strategy and objectives into ongoing communications efforts (and vice versa).
  • Manage internal accountability of implementation of resulting collaborative strategies, tasks and activities.
  • Lead efforts with Operations staff and IT consultants to develop and oversee the integration of core systems and databases necessary to implement communications strategies.

Oversee strategic utilization of key communications assets. (10%)

  • Lead the development and production of content for NCRP's journal "Responsive Philanthropy" and the organizational blog.
  • Support non-communications staff in engaging with journalists and on social media around their areas of expertise.

Assist in other departmental efforts as needed (10%)

  • Perform media relations tasks as assigned including drafting press releases, pitching reporters and fielding inquiries.
  • Back-up the Strategic Communications Director on rapid response, identification of philanthropic and/or movement issues to track, and external media and partner relations.

Contribute to NCRP’s organizational success by keeping up with all required administrative tasks. (5%)

  • Complete and submit timesheets and any other administrative documents in a timely fashion.
  • Update Bamboo HR with requests for vacation leave, sick leave or other needed time off.
  • Attend all staff and departmental meetings and trainings.

Strategist’s mind: Quickly grasps the subtleties of complex issues and processes, and identifies patterns in challenges. Comes up with insightful, pragmatic, equitable, and sustainable ways to tackle common challenges and produce positive change. Skillfully takes a concept from idea to implementation.

Strong sense of ownership and resilience: Plans ahead, anticipates needs and finds alternative paths, when needed, to get to the finish line. Bounces back from setbacks and obstacles . Holds a high bar for accuracy and impact even when things are hectic.

Models and inspires accountability: Inspires and motivates others to engage actively and meet goals. Highly collaborative and effective at managing across, up and down. Delegates skillfully and holds the team accountable. Acknowledges growing edges (in self and others).
