Position Summary:

Reporting to the Philanthropic Controller, the Senior Investment Accountant will partner with key stakeholders (internally and externally) to lead and manage Tides’ financial strategy, planning, analysis and reporting activities for philanthropic clients as well as Investment Accounting and Financial and Tax reporting. This position plays a key role leading the organization’s business strategy and developing appropriate and useful financial management tools and metrics to track performance, conduct risk analysis, and develop short and long term financial strategies for Tides 


The Senior Investment Accountant is an exempt position. Exempt employees are expected to work the appropriate and necessary time in order to complete key assignments and related tasks on schedule. 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Investment Accounting

  • Record Tides’ investment activities, analyze the possible variances and make necessary journal entries.
  • Initiate investment transfers and quarterly pay-outs. 
  • Perform valuations and record-keeping of alternative investments, direct investments, mission-related investments and provide assistance in the preparation of valuation materials to assist in monitoring of valuation procedures or mission-related & direct investments. 
  • Import and upload data related to monthly investments in NetSuite for analysis and review by others to identify any errors and resolve discrepancies.  
  • Take an active part in preparing the yearly budget for investment income and assist in the timely and accurate reporting of all the transactions related to investments.
  • Coordinate and manage all the aspects related to the general ledger accounting for all the investments and interact with the investment accounting system.
  • Reconcile investment accounts and prepare investment rollforward schedules.


Financial Analysis & Reporting

  • Economic and financial analysis and modeling to measure, assess, and adapt business operations and service offerings for Tides Foundation and its fund clients
  • Ensure accuracy of quarterly donor statements for philanthropic fund clients
  • Budgeting, revenue forecasting, and financial management reporting for philanthropic fund clients
  • Partner with the Investment Manager and Controller for cash budgeting and forecasting 
  • Analysis for all types of data projects—trends, risks, correlation, indicators, etc. 
  • Understanding of customer needs and market opportunities
  • Support efforts on Business Intelligence, a database and analyses methodology of Tides financial and business information useful to management
  • Development and maintenance of dashboards useful to the daily management of the organization
  • Identification and translation of economic indicators to provide information for financial projections
  • Project management of intricate analyses, coordinating between other colleagues and occasionally clients
  • Communicating and interpreting quantitative results in writing, graphically and verbally for staff and management at all levels throughout the organization
  • Development of tools to enhance financial and other decision-making
  • Accomplishing quality work within established timeframes, using time and resources effectively and prioritizing tasks to meet current workload and new challenges
  • Manage the preparation of all regulatory reports (i.e. Forms 990, 990T, state and federal tax returns, etc.
  • Other duties or related projects as assigned

  • Ability to synthesize and analyze information rapidly, and to develop cogent arguments using financial data, market research and qualitative inputs
  • Must be able to plan and manage complex projects with contributors from multiple functions and positions
  • Must be proficient and comfortable working in teams on project-based work in both structured and unstructured environments, both as a project leader and an active participant
  • Experience with systems like Netsuite and account aggregation solutions such as Tamarac preferred.

Education & Experience:

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in accounting, finance or other rigorous, quantitative field  
  • 5+ years of experience in a similar position
  • Masters in Accounting, CPA or MBA preferred
