The Coalition for Networked Information (CNI), a joint initiative of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and EDUCAUSE, is dedicated to the use of information technology to advance scholarship and education. Over 200 institutions representing higher education, publishing, information technology, scholarly and professional organizations, foundations, and libraries and library organizations make up CNI’s members. CNI is based in Washington, DC.

CNI seeks a Communications Coordinator to manage its communications and outreach initiatives and to help coordinate online events. This position is a great opportunity for someone with excellent writing and editing skills who loves to learn, wants to work in a mission-driven environment, and is interested in higher education, libraries, and technology.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage social media (including Facebook and Twitter)
  • Manage production of organizational materials, including print, digital, and multimedia
  • Assist with events and activities, including managing virtual events tools and platforms (currently CNI uses Zoom and Sched for online events)
  • Write mailings, posts, press releases, and reports on activities and interests related to the organization
  • Serve as project manager for WordPress website
  • Edit writings by leadership for style, substance, grammar, and spelling
  • Remain informed about CNI’s program areas
  • Track new technologies that may benefit communications and outreach programs
  • Coordinate CNI's awards programs

Required Skills and Qualifications: 

  • 2-3 years work experience in communications, libraries or information science, or a related field
  • 4-year degree required; experience with graduate work is desirable
  • Strong writing and editing skills; superb attention to detail
  • Must be able to grasp the essence of an event or a publication and convey it in clear, succinct written language
  • Some experience with website management
  • Ability to handle multiple, simultaneous, and some short-notice tasks and projects effectively and efficiently in a deadline-driven environment
  • Must be a self-starter, able to work independently, but also comfortable in a small-office setting where everyone pitches in
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing and monitoring priorities
  • Strong research, analysis, and evaluation skills
  • Excellent judgment
  • Flexibility, initiative, responsiveness, and desire to learn about new subjects and technologies
  • Familiarity and ease with social media; must have a Facebook account
  • Experience managing Zoom, and using WordPress and Microsoft Word software

Ideal candidates will possess experience with/knowledge of some of these areas (not required):

  • High fluency with WordPress and Microsoft Word software
  • Event facilitation (e.g., hosting, moderating)
  • Publication layout and design
  • Video editing and/or podcast production
  • General understanding of the higher education system and of scholarly publishing
  • Knowledge of research and researchers
  • Writing/editing reports, news releases, and posts in association or higher ed environment
  • Usage data, SEO

This full-time (37.5 hours), benefited position is based in Washington, DC; ability to work in-office as needed will be required. Modest travel required (1-2 trips annually).
