Regional Program Manager for Radio Journalist Corps Excellence

Report for America is a national service program that places emerging journalists into local newsrooms to report on urgent under-covered issues and communities. It is an initiative of The GroundTruth Project, an award winning, independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit news organization dedicated to supporting the next generation of journalists.

Report for America is a dynamic, rapidly-growing answer to America’s crisis in local news reporting. This year Report for America will expand from roughly 225 corps members to 300 as part of an ambitious plan to ensure that every American county has regular access to excellent local news. Our reporters and photojournalists work at newspapers large and small, public radio stations, TV stations, digital publications, wire services and investigative nonprofits. They will be in more than 200 newsrooms across 49 states, plus Puerto Rico, Guam and Washington, D.C.

We are seeking a Corps Excellence Regional Manager with radio-journalism experience to oversee the running of the Report for America program on a regional level from the perspective of the emerging journalists and their assigned newsrooms. We are particularly interested in candidates with a public radio background to help support our public radio reporters and newsrooms. This position is full-time and can be performed remotely. The position reports to Vice President of Corps Excellence. 

Responsibilities

• Counsel and advise corps members.
• Contribute public radio expertise to support our audio-related training initiatives, recruitment and mentors. 
• Work with all media outlets to ensure understanding and compliance with Report for America program values, mission and procedures
• Initiate and build partnerships to develop corps member opportunities for experiential endeavors locally, state-wide, and regionally
• Conduct site visits to evaluate appropriateness and relevance of assignments for corps members
• Conduct monthly conference calls with employers and corps members
• Assist Director of Recruitment in identifying potential media companies, universities and other journalism groups in your region to participate in RFA
• Work alongside Report for America and GroundTruth colleagues to identify and promote speaking engagements, conference participation and other opportunities for corps members, funders and partners in your region
• Produce monthly reports on the program’s progress and the progress of the corps members in your region
• Promote diversity within the program
• Assist the Vice President of Corps Excellence, corps members and media companies in the contest entry process­
• Coordinate meetings and other activities for annual visit of Vice President of Corps Excellence

Experience:

• Meaningful time (7-10 years) in the journalism industry and public radio, including management
• Open-mindedness
• Ability to mentor
• Must be willing to travel
• Good listening and observation skills
• Quality problem solver who can also help others to navigate solving problems
• Skilled negotiator
• Steward of diversity

Familiarity with online communication tools such as Twitter, Facebook, etc.

Interviews will be conducted via video conferencing.
