The Advent School: Associate Director of Enrichment

The Advent School, located in the Beacon Hill section of Boston, Massachusetts, serves 200 students in pre-Kindergarten through Sixth Grade. A mission-focused school founded in the principles of social justice, Advent has served the students and families of Boston since 1961. Through its Reggio Emilia-inspired curriculum, Advent's faculty deliver authentic, rigorous, and experiential learning opportunities that encourage students to "learn with passion, act with courage, and change the world."

The Enrichment Department comprises six robust programs. The After-School program serves approximately 100 students in pre-Kindergarten through Sixth Grade per day. We offer around 50 classes per week that range from robotics to sailing and a private music and language program. This department also hosts the Design at Advent summer program, school vacation week programs, ADVENTures days, Makerspace Saturdays, and child care for some school events.

The Advent School seeks a committed, experienced, and passionate individual to serve as an Associate Director of Enrichment. In this role, they will support the Director of Enrichment, oversee the Enrichment Program Coordinator, and share responsibility for the overall success of Advent's enrichment programs. This role will:

  • Lead programs and classes for students
  • Plan programming with administrative work and research
  • Support Enrichment faculty with classroom management and logistics 

The Associate Director of Enrichment is a salaried position for the 2021-22 academic year that includes medical and dental insurance along with a 401(k) plan. 

During the school year, the hours are Monday through Friday from 10:30 to 6:30 p.m, and four to six Saturdays from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Additional weekends and nights may be required as directed by the Head of School. During February and April breaks, the Associate Director of Enrichment will support vacation week programs by working an eight-hour shift each day of vacation. The hours for summer (mid-June through early August) are 8:00 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • With the Director of Enrichment, develop engaging programming for after-school, Makerspace Saturday, and summer programs
  • Assist in interviewing, hiring, and on-boarding new Enrichment faculty members
  • Plan and run faculty orientation at key points during the year 
  • Support program faculty with classroom management
  • Schedule substitute teachers
  • Create and maintain registration forms for Enrichment programs, Enrichment events, and daily after-school attendance, enrollment, and health forms
  • Collect and maintain health forms for non-Advent students enrolled in February, April, or summer programs
  • Manage all email and phone call communication related to after-school arrival, dismissal, absences, etc.
  • Oversee private music and language lessons; schedule make-up lessons as needed
  • Participates in and assist in planning professional development opportunities

Required Skills & Characteristics

The ideal candidate will have 1- 2 years experience as a program coordinator or site direction in an after-school, camp, or child care setting, in addition to:

  • Excellent time management, efficiency, and ability to manage multiple tasks and projects
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate with people in a courteous and positive manner
  • Interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with the Advent School faculty and administrators along with the Enrichment program faculty
  • Excellent administrative skills, including comfort and familiarity with computers, technology, and databases
  • Ability to remain calm and maintain a high level of professionalism at all times with children, parents, and colleagues
  • Well-organized, thorough, and highly reliable
  • Demonstrated problem-solving ability
  • Strong STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) knowledge
  • Bachelor's degree
