Job Summary

Philadelphia OIC has two openings for a GED/HiSET Instructor at our Broad street location. The GED/HiSET Instructor will work within the Education Department to provide direct instruction to adult learners preparing for the General Education Development (GED) or High School Equivalency Test (HiSET) examination. The successful candidates will be responsible for teaching GED/HiSET Language and Social Studies OR GED/HiSET Mathematics and Science to program participants.

Primary Job Functions

·        Provide subject-specific training in Language, Social Studies, Science, or Mathematics to diverse adult learners with varying academic levels through a combination of computer-based and paper-based instruction

·        Utilize Philadelphia OIC approved GED or HiSET curriculum outline to create lesson plans and assignments

·        Create formal and informal assessments to evaluate students’ preparedness for GED or HiSET subject area examination

·        Develop strategies to encourage students to register and take GED or HiSET subject area examinations

·        Assure students are on pace to take their GED or HiSET exams after each session

·        Manage student attendance records and performance on the official GED or HiSET practice test and GED or HiSET subject area examination

·        Assist students create an email account

·        Participate in new teacher training workshops and HiSET training and curriculum outline

Level of Language Proficiency

Primary Job Requirements

·        Minimum Associates degree in Science, Engineering or Math (STEM), English, or closely related field, with at least 2 years of relevant teaching experience

·        Proven ability to maintain an orderly classroom environment

·        Demonstrated expertise in subject area

·        Strong computer skills (Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)

·        Must be able to pass Child Abuse Clearance, FBI Fingerprint Clearance, and PA Criminal Background Check

Preferred Skills and Experience

·        Bachelor’s degree, Secondary Teacher Certification is a plus

·        Experience teaching reading or math to adult learners

·        Demonstrated knowledge of GED or HiSET examination and content

·        Ability to work independently and as part of a team

·        Strong organizational skills
