$20 - $20The Organizer can expect to work an average of 20 hours/week at $20/hour. Weekly hours may increase during periods of travel or around particularly time-intensive events. Potential for reduced hours during the summer growing season for farmer applicants.

The National Young Farmers Coalition (Young Farmers) seeks a dynamic, part-time New York Campaign Organizer to drive forward farmer-led change in the New York legislature. The Organizer will collaborate with our New York chapters to: engage in direct lobbying in support of New York policy priorities, support chapter advocacy planning efforts, support development of farmer-led, creative, inclusive, and equitable policy proposals, plan grassroots actions, and conduct outreach to increase member participation and support chapter growth. The Organizer will report to our State Policy Campaigns Director and be supported by our state policy and organizing teams and by our National Chapter Manager. The Organizer will ideally be remotely based within regular travel distance of Albany, NY or be based in Hudson, NY at Young Farmers headquarters.

Primary Responsibilities

Policy and Advocacy (60%)

  • Engage in direct lobbying to support reintroduction of legislation to amend the New Farmers Grant Fund program, reintroduction of legislation to amend the Young Farmers Loan Forgiveness Incentive program, and advancing proposals on other key New York policy priorities. 
  • Plan grassroots advocacy actions such as legislative farm tours and roundtables, and lobby days. 
  • Support chapter advocacy planning efforts such as listening sessions, advocacy trainings, and policy meetings. 
  • Support development of farmer-led, creative, inclusive, and equitable policy proposals to address young farmer challenges in New York. 

Stakeholder Engagement and Outreach (40%)

  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with farmer chapters, partners, and policy officials. 
  • Represent Young Farmers at key meetings, events, and conferences related to NY campaign efforts.
  • Conduct outreach to engage farmer chapters and members in advocacy.
  • Support existing NY chapters and help develop new chapters in the state. 

Qualifications

  • Strong Communicator: Excellent writing and proofreading skills with an ability to draft thought-provoking and compelling language in support of policy and advocacy work; ability to engage in clear and timely communications with farmers, partners, and policy makers over the phone, via email, and in-person; and willingness to be bold, meet new people, and make introductions to farmers and policy officials. 
  • Experience organizing and/or advocating for change. (no professional policy/advocacy experience required)
  • Purpose-Driven & Equity Oriented: Familiarity and alignment with the mission of our organization. A demonstrated commitment to racial equity in the workplace and in policy and advocacy work.
  • Organized and detail-driven: Strong time management skills, experience meeting multiple project deadlines and objectives, and ability to work independently. 
  • Collaborative: Experience working collaboratively with a team. Willingness to work collaboratively with remote colleagues.
  • Willingness and ability to work on a flexible schedule and attend events during the day and/or evening, particularly during legislative session. 
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness and ability to travel regularly to Albany and occasionally throughout the State. 

The ideal candidate may also have:

  • Connections with New York farming communities, partner organizations, or policy officials.
  • Experience with and curiosity for technology and social media in the context of organizing and advocacy.
