About Sandy Hook Promise 

Sandy Hook Promise (SHP) is a non-partisan national nonprofit formed and led by several family members whose loved ones were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December 2012. Based in Newtown, Connecticut, our intent is to honor all victims of gun violence by turning our tragedy into a moment of transformation by providing prevention programs that protect all children from gun violence. SHP achieves this by educating and empowering parents, schools and youth organizations with research-based mental health & wellness programs that teach adults and students how to identify, intervene and help at-risk individuals BEFORE they hurt themselves or others.   

 

Position Summary 

The Policy Associate is an essential member of the SHP policy team and will be responsible for supporting SHP’s planning, development, and implementation of legislative initiatives and advocacy work in the areas of school safety and gun violence prevention at the federal and state level. The Policy Associate reports to the National Policy Director.  

 

Primary Responsibilities 

  • Conduct research and analysis in the areas of gun violence prevention, mental health and education policy to assist in carrying out both policy team and self-initiated projects 
  • Track and brief managers on all federal legislative, regulatory, and litigation developments on SHP priority issues  
  • Track, analyze, and identify opportunities for SHP to support platform-aligned gun safety state legislation in non-priority states 
  • Work in collaboration with the National Engagement Manager on engagement strategy and mobilization efforts in non-priority states, as necessary 
  • Develop policy materials for federal and state legislators and other stakeholders in coordination with internal teams at SHP and oversee organization/tracking of these materials 
  • Monitor and attend briefings, hearings, panels, and events related to SHP priorities in Congress and hosted by mission-aligned organizations and brief policy team on key learnings and resources 
  • Develop, maintain, and distribute policy letters, testimony and materials for Congress and other external stakeholders in coordination with the policy and communications teams to advance SHP priorities 
  • Support SHP’s legislative advocacy by educating and maintaining outreach to Congressional offices  
  • Plan and coordinate logistics for policy-related events and briefings 
  • Maintain and respond to the policy team phone line, voicemails, and info@shp emails 
  • Additional duties as assigned 
  • Minimal travel (0-10%) 

 

Desired Skills and Experience 

  • Commitment to Sandy Hook Promise’s mission and goals 
  • Demonstrated commitment to racial, equity, diversity and inclusive principles  
  • 2-4 years of policy or advocacy experience at the federal or state level 
  • Excellent writing, research, and verbal communications skills; meticulous attention to detail 
  • Strong self-starter with ability to manage up and work in a highly collaborative and fast-paced environment 
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines 
  • Analytic skills and a demonstrated ability to think strategically 
  • Exercise sound professional judgement and discretion when representing SHP externally  
  • General understanding of political and legislative processes 
  • Public speaking skills and willingness to speak on behalf of organization, often before legislators
