POSITION OVERVIEW

Oxbow’s Native Plant Nursery and Conservation Teams work to support conservation and restoration of our region’s native flora. The Native Plant Team produces about 75,000 high quality, locally adapted and genetically diverse plants each season for use in restoration, landscaping and retail nursery sales. The Conservation Team plans and implements ecological restoration projects and ecological research to improve ecosystem health and contribute to our understanding of the species and processes that make up natural systems.

 

Native Plant and Conservation Technician is a one-year full-time Temporary position that splits time between the Native Plant Nursery and Oxbow Conservation Team. From March to July 2020 the Technician will assist nursery staff in all plant production tasks, and from August 2021 through Feb 2022 the Technician will assist Conservation team in invasive plant removal, planting native plants, volunteer management, and various ecological research tasks. The position requires someone able to take on responsibility, work efficiently with attention to detail. Additionally, we are looking for individuals with a background and interest in botany, horticulture, nursery science and/or environmental stewardship, and an enthusiasm for native plants and their production.

During the Native Plant Nursery portion of the position, the Technician will work M-F, 8:00-4:00, and after moving to the Conservation team in August the technician will work M-F, 9-5. Throughout the season, occasional weekend work will be required.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform duties around crop production, including: sowing, thinning, transplanting, pruning, re-organizing nursery stock, weeding, irrigation, and inventory monitoring
  • Assist in putting together plant orders, loading delivery vehicles
  • Maintaining organization and cleanliness of the nursery and equipment

·        Assist with invasive species removal, site preparation, and installation of native plants

·        Assist in oversight of volunteer restoration events (as allowed by public safety guidelines, and following Oxbow Farm & Conservation Center COVID-19 safety guidelines).

·        Assist in movement and staging of plants, equipment and materials.

·        Assist with amphibian field research, including vegetation surveys, installation and maintenance of dataloggers, and amphibian egg mass surveys.

·        Data entry

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of and enthusiasm for native plants of the Pacific Northwest region and their associated habitats    
  • Work experience/background in botany, environmental science, ecological restoration, horticulture, or related field
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment related to nursery production, landscaping, or restoration activities, and a strong desire to learn more
  • Consistent attention to detail
  • Ability to take direction, ask for help/clarity when necessary, and accept constructive feedback on work and technique
  • Ability to work: standing, sitting, bending over or kneeling; to lift heavy & awkward objects, up to 50 lbs.; perform physical work such as digging or planting; and in inclement weather
  • Ability to work independently and within a team
  • Positive leadership skills
  • Flexible, creative, and able to perform well in diverse conditions and under pressure
  • Experience leading volunteers in outdoor work (preferred), or other experience professionally interfacing with the public.
  • Preferred: possession of a personal vehicle that can be used to move between Oxbow and off-site work locations (mileage reimbursed).
