Founded in 1971 as the Women’s Legal Defense Fund, the National Partnership is a nonprofit, nonpartisan 501(c)3 organization located in Washington, D.C. with a $9 million budget and $18 million endowment.

Our organization is in the midst of an ongoing organizational evolution to operationalize our commitment to racial justice throughout our work, internally and externally. In addition, we recently integrated our reproductive health and rights and our health care portfolios under the banner of our new Health Justice team that centers the experiences and priorities of women of color in policy development, advocacy, and partnership strategies.

Position Summary

The Policy Associate is an integral part of the Health Justice team, which works to advance laws and policies that achieve health equity in maternal and infant health, reproductive health, rights and justice, and health system transformation. This work encompasses solving for health and health care inequities, adverse social determinants of health, and systemic racism, as well as improving the quality of clinical care. The Policy Associate is the backbone of a robust team of professionals and participates actively in the work of the team by providing outreach, research assistance, and administrative support. They must be organized, proactive and a self-starter, able to take direction from, and add value to, the work of multiple team members. A strong interest and commitment to working on health justice and racial equity issues is required. The position is entry-level, with ample networking opportunities, and the team’s commitment to mentoring, teaching new skills, and other forms of professional development.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of this position are varied and will include approximately 30 percent outreach support, 40 percent research, policy and editorial support and 30 percent administrative support. Responsibilities include:

  • Contribute to the strategic thinking of the team and the generation of new ideas and approaches to achieving health justice
  • Provide coordination and logistical support for the organization’s patient and consumer Advisory Councils, including developing meeting materials and nurturing relationships with Council members
  • Manage administration of the Women’s Health Defense Table coalition, including meeting logistics, maintaining the listserv, and coordinating agendas
  • Draft the Repro Health Watch, a weekly email digest designed to give readers the most important reproductive health, rights, and justice news of the week, which is distributed to 100,000+ subscribers
  • Assist team members with academic and legislative research and data requests
  • Support the production of written work products, such as fact sheets, issue briefs, talking points, coalition emails, and presentations, for dissemination to the Administration, Capitol Hill and coalition partners. Activities include policy and factual research, limited drafting of sections, proofreading, and editing;
  • Assist with grant management activities, including tracking activities, contributing to and proofreading written reports, presenting findings, and submitting necessary paperwork
  • Support the hiring of Health Justice team interns, as needed
  • Participate in organization’s ongoing internal change processes and racial equity work
  • Provide the Health Justice team with administrative support including managing the Vice President’s calendar and assisting with expense reports, providing logistics and scheduling support for meetings, events, and webinars, and assisting with organizing and maintaining files and spreadsheets and other tools to help keep the team organized and productive
  • Provide limited in-office administrative support to the organization, including occasional front desk coverage

Reporting/Supervision

The Position reports to the Managing Director for Health Justice.

Qualifications

An ideal candidate must be able to demonstrate:

  • Strong research and writing skills and ability to produce high-quality materials in an accurate and timely manner
  • Desire and ability to work effectively and respectfully with diverse groups of people in a collaborative environment &mdashl both internally and externally
  • Commitment to racial, gender, and economic justice that incorporates intersectional identities
  • Commitment to working on issues related to health justice, reproductive health rights and justice (including abortion access), maternal and infant health, and health system transformation
  • Substantial experience with relevant office technology and platforms, including Microsoft suite, Zoom and Google suite
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent attention to detail - including citations - and organizational skills
  • Ability to give and receive feedback within the workplace in a respectful and constructive manner
  • Knowledge and/or experience (broadly defined) working on health justice issues, applying an equity lens and analysis in work products, and/or working in coalitions with other advocates and advisors is an asset but not required
  • Experience working with InDesign or Asana a plus
  • Bilingual abilities are a plus, but not required

Classification

The National Partnership recognizes a staff bargaining unit, National Partnership United, affiliated with the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union/IFPTE Local 70, a union for non-profit workers. This position is included in the NP United bargaining unit. Specific employment terms are subject to collective bargaining.

Salary & Benefits

Compensation for this position starts at $55,000, depending on experience. The National Partnership provides a generous benefits package that includes three weeks annual vacation time, paid sick time, paid federal holidays plus the last week of December, health, dental, and vision coverage, 403B and SEP-IRA retirement options, and paid family and medical leave for eligible employees.

This is a full-time position based in our Washington, D.C. office. As the safety and wellbeing of our team is of utmost importance, all National Partnership staff members are working remotely until it is safe for us to resume working in an office, traveling, and holding in-person meetings. However, willingness to relocate to D.C. (if not currently local), is essential.
