Safe Horizon offers a variety of programs for victims of crimes and domestic violence at over 80 locations City-wide. The Capital Project Coordinator, under the direction of the agency’s Director of Capital Projects, will be responsible for assisting in overseeing a wide variety of facilities capital projects to acquire, renovate, upgrade, and maintain Safe Horizon’s facilities. Examples include electrical capacity upgrades, office space reconfiguration and renovation, construction and fit out of new office and residential shelter space, and mechanical systems upgrades, repair and/or replacement.

Essential Job Functions: 

Major responsibilities include inspection and assessment of facilities conditions and identification of items requiring repair and/or upgrade, performing feasibility studies and providing cost estimates and schedules for such work, and ensuring safety of design and work practices. The position will manage and monitor work performed by third party vendors and contractors for facility renovation, upgrades and installation. Key functions include:

·        Provide condition assessments of Safe Horizon facilities to identify repair, maintenance, and code compliance issues and devise and implement cost effective solutions;

·        Working with FPM colleagues and Program departments, devise work plans, scopes, and schedules for selected projects;

·        Prepare requests for proposals and project specifications;

·        Identify prospective vendors/consultants/contractors, solicit bids, negotiate contract terms and manage all aspects of the project through to completion;

·        Review payments for consultant/contractor services;

·        Coordinate with on-site facility and program managers to ensure proper communication of upcoming work schedules, status of ongoing work and to minimize any disruption to ongoing program operation;

·        Inspect sites for compliance with applicable standards, codes, and regulations;

·        Enforce applicable construction and building code requirements;

·        Facilitate project meetings with vendors, subcontractors, and other stakeholders;

·        Document and distribute meeting minutes, ensuring assigned action items are completed;

·        Maintain all project documentation and assist in the development and implementation of project management software



·        Bachelor’s degree in Planning, Construction Management, Design or related course of study, or relevant equivalent experience

·        1+ year of experience in facility planning, construction project management, and/or building facilities performance metrics and standards preferred

·        NY State driver’s license desirable, as some travel and after-hours assignments may be required within the five boroughs of New York City


Knowledge and Skills: 

·        Demonstrated success using drafting or design software (AutoCAD, Rhino, Adobe)

·        Ability to provide concise and clear facility condition evaluations and solutions;

·        Ability to collaborate with and direct the activities of staff and consultants/contractors;

·        Strong communication and negotiating skills verbally and in writing with familiarity in contract and construction management principles;

·        Ability to work under pressure in a calm and reassuring manner and to work independently;

·        Demonstrated experience simultaneously managing and completing multiple on-going capital projects and managing project budgets within deadlines;

·        Ability to read floor plans, blueprints, schematic drawings, and/or construction drawings

·        Analyzing problems, identifying alternative solutions, projecting consequences of proposed actions, and making recommendations in support of goals;

·        Familiarity with New York City Building, FDNY and other applicable regulatory codes and requirements;

·        Demonstrated commitment to safety, including safety considerations in engineering design, recommendations, and implementation;

·        Must be able to work effectively in a team setting and regularly solicit input from others in the development, planning, scoping, estimating and execution of projects;

·        Strong organizational skills and the initiative to plan, monitor and report on project progress and spending;

·        Familiarity with the use of project management software with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

·        Bilingual, Spanish, is preferred
