Maryland Legal Aid (MLA) provides life-changing civil legal assistance to eligible residents in every part of the State. Since 1911, MLA has provided high-quality legal services to low-income, and marginalized individuals and communities–helping them remedy their civil legal issues and become empowered to overcome challenges, achieve stability and independence, and an overall better life.

MLA is dedicated to preserving the basic human needs and basic human rights of clients, particularly as they navigate the justice system. MLA staff, pro bono attorneys, community partners, and general supporters all play important roles in ensuring that the legal playing field is leveled so that those most in need achieve equal access to justice. It is because of this diverse support that MLA is able to be a voice to tens of thousands of economically disadvantaged and vulnerable Marylanders every year.

Essential Functions:

To provide planning, direction, support and development of an efficient, robust statewide legal training program to MLA staff. To oversee supervision of an innovative pro bono program, focusing on private attorney involvement efforts consistent with MLA’s mission and vision. Provide direct supervision to Assistant Directors for Training and Pro Bono. This position reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer and coordinates with the Chief Counsel concerning courses, training support, efforts of offices, pro bono litigation and recruitment of instructors

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop an inventory of in-house courses for yearly training and a calendar and budget to implement the course offerings;
  • Maintain a database of staff training requests, to include both external and internal trainings;
  • Manage all approvals, notifications and discussions related to staff training requests;
  • Coordinate the annual New Lawyer Training Advocacy Institute;
  • Provide direction, management and oversight of all statewide training efforts for both advocacy and non-advocacy staff;
  • Coordinate with MLA’s Task Force Chairs and advocacy staff to identify current and future training needs;
  • Establish and maintain relationships with leadership in the private bar and bar associations statewide to facilitate training opportunities for MLA staff;
  • Promote courses and recruit instructors and materials to ensure that staff members develop appropriate professional skills and knowledge on a consistent basis;
  • Design and develop trainings, assemble materials, identify trainers, handle logistics, and maintain training files; 
  • Manage and coordinate the training component of MLA’s summer law clerk program; 
  • Maintain an annual training schedule for all MLA staff;
  • Provide leadership, training and support for advocacy and operations staff on matters concerning Private Attorney Involvement;
  • Guide the statewide placement of pro bono cases in areas of law consistent with MLA’s priorities;
  • Build relationships with law firms, solo practitioners, bar associations, law students, and other professionals to assist with the delivery of legal services;
  • Participate in grant writing activities to continue current project funding and develop future funding opportunities within the pro bono and training programs;
  • Direct the development of recognition events at MLA to celebrate the accomplishments of pro bono volunteers;
  • Provide legal supervision for all case representation within the pro bono program, including case reviews, case closures and preparation of cases for audits;
  • Ensure pro bono data integrity in the Legal Server case management system; and
  • Assist the Executive Management team in other training and pro bono efforts as needed and performing such other and further duties assigned within the scope of the essential functions of the position.

Qualifications:

Ability to think creatively, interact with pro bono partners statewide, and foster successful relationships between pro bono volunteers and local MLA offices. Must have a demonstrated depth of knowledge, practice and experience in the development of trainings and adult learning styles. Must be a licensed attorney with at least five years legal or other comparable relevant experience.
