About Equality Federation:

Equality Federation is the movement builder and strategic partner to state-based organizations advocating for LGBTQ people. From Equality Florida to Freedom Oklahoma to Basic Rights Oregon, we amplify the power of the state-based LGBTQ movement.

We work collaboratively on critical issues—from advancing workplace fairness and family recognition to defeating anti-transgender bathroom bans and HIV criminalization laws—that affect how LGBTQ people experience the world from cradle to grave in the communities we call home.

We have three primary goals:

  • Build momentum at the state and local level toward pro-LGBTQ policies;
  • Strengthen the leadership, organizational capacity, and power of our member organizations; and
  • Drive the development of a collaborative, racial justice informed approach to LGBTQ advocacy work.

Our work is grounded in long-term relationship building, creating spaces for peer-learning and networking, tailored coaching and training, and providing cutting-edge tools and strategies to our members to accelerate their advocacy.

Our team, although distributed across the country, is close-knit and works collaboratively.

The Opportunity

We are searching for someone to tell the story of our work. You’re a seasoned communications professional with the skills to grow and elevate our brand on a national level and the desire to roll up your sleeves and support grassroots LGBTQ work in the states. You bring a detail- and results-oriented approach to our day-to-day communications and provide big-picture strategic direction to not only our organization but also the national coalitions in which we participate. A racial equity analysis informs your approach to the work.

In deep collaboration with our development and program teams, you’ll create our communications plan and manage our organizational communications, including email campaigns, member communications, conference and event marketing, social media, and earned media. In coordination with the program team, you will provide messaging and communications support to our 40+ member groups through one-on-one coaching, online and in-person training, and leading coordinated campaigns around national news and advocacy (e.g., coordinating Equality Federation member group tweetstorms, LTE campaigns, etc. around a national issue such as the Equality Act or a SCOTUS ruling.)

As part of our entirely distributed team, you will work remotely and may be based anywhere in the contiguous United States with broadband internet and access to a major airport. You’ll love the flexibility and opportunity to do national work from your own community. You’ll be available for four week-long trips a year, as well as occasional travel to convenings and external conferences.

Key Objectives and Responsibilities

Member Communications Support (20%)

In order to build momentum in the states, communications is an important tool. Our top priority is always to be in service of our members and this means helping them leverage communications strategies in the service of policy and advocacy work in the states.
