The Human Resources Generalist is responsible for coordinating human resource activities, such as employment, labor relations, benefits, and employee services. The position also provides administrative and operational support for payroll processing. This position is fixed-term with an expected end-date of December 14, 2018.

Reports to: Deputy Director of Payroll & Human Resources


  • Assists Working America in carrying out various human resources programs and procedures for all employees at the national headquarters and in each of our field offices;
  • Conducts new employee orientations at the national headquarters to foster a positive attitude toward Working America goals. Assists office managers in field offices with new employee orientation;
  • Participates in benefits administration to include claims resolutions, change reporting, and communication of benefit information to employees (to include policy changes, open-enrollment etc.);
  • Receives inquiries regarding policies and procedures. Works with legal counsel to formulate responses;
  • Assists in exit interview process;
  • Develops and maintains a human resources system that meets management information needs. The system must be accurate, and remain confidential and secure;
  • Administers benefits programs such as life, medical, dental and vision insurance, vacation, compensatory leave, overtime of non-exempt staff, sick leave, parental leave, emergency personal leave, compassionate leave, jury duty/witness leave, family and medical leave;
  • Keeps records of benefits plans participation such as medical, vision and dental insurance; personnel transactions such as hires, terminations, layoffs, promotions, transfers, step increases, and performance evaluations;
  • Creates systems for compliance with collective bargaining agreements to include monitoring probationary periods, performance evaluation and step increases; maintaining up to date bargaining unit, seniority and recall lists;
  • Assists in managing job descriptions and job vacancy notices (internally and externally);
  • Coordinates use of temporary employees;
  • Prepares annual EEO report; maintains other records, reports, and logs pertaining to applicant flow procedures;
  • Oversees the analysis, maintenance, and communication of records required by law or local governing bodies, or other departments at Working America;
  • Participates in Field Staff, Office Manager, Accounting Department and All-Staff meetings, and any other meeting as requested;
  • Consults legal counsel regularly to ensure that policies comply with federal and state law, contracts, and organizational policy;
  • Maintains organization charts and employee directory;
  • Disseminates required HR notices to the national headquarters and all offices;
  • Provides administrative support for personnel-related payroll transactions;
  • Makes photocopies, fax documents and perform other clerical functions;
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • A bachelor's degree preferred; Associate degree in a related field;
  • Three years experience in the HR field;
  • Experience supporting the day-to-day administrative needs of employee benefit plans;
  • Understanding of payroll processing systems;
  • Must have long-term interest in the Human Resources profession;
  • Exhibit ethical conduct and maintain confidentiality regarding all aspects of work at all times;
  • Dependable, consistently at work and on time, strictly follow instructions and policy;
  • Demonstrate accuracy and thoroughness, and monitor own work and ensure quality;
  • Ability to prioritize, plan and organize work activities, and consistently use time efficiently;
  • Strong interpersonal skills;
  • Good judgment;
  • Effective oral and written communication skills; Computer efficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook;
  • Experience with ADP WorkforceNow preferred;
  • Familiarity of Labor movement required with Labor movement experience preferred;
  • Commitment to Labor issues.
