Position Description: Latino Union seeks a Day Laborer Organizer to facilitate a sustainable, impactful, worker-led program that builds power, organization, and resources for day laborers in Chicago. This is a program specifically for day laborers, men who seek temporary work in the construction, landscaping, and moving industries. The organizer will also coordinate the Albany Park Workers Center, the hiring hall program of Latino Union. This requires non-flexible hours Monday-Friday, 8am-12pm. This organizer will also coordinate efforts with the corner day laborer outreach organizer.

 

Responsibilities Include:

  • Opening hiring hall at 8am, preparing paperwork for the day, overseeing the hiring hall’s daily activities, and preparing the hiring hall’s daily report at 12pm when the program closes.
  • Using the hiring hall to engage Latino Union’s base of Latinx and Black day laborer and household worker members in creating safe, living-wage jobs, growing as leaders, and building a larger movement for immigrants and workers rights
  • Building positive relationships with Latino Union members
  • Conduct outreach and recruitment to day laborers to grow participation and membership
  • Organize the workforce development and health and safety trainings which serve as organizing tools
  • Represent Latino Union in meetings and conferences with the National Day Laborer Organizing Network
  • Work with Latino Union staff, members, board, and volunteers to support broader campaigns, programming, and coalition work in the immigrant worker rights movement

 

Desired Qualifications:

·      Minimum of 3 years experience with worker/community organizing; day laborers or low-income, workers; or participatory, culturally relevant, community-led programming

·      Experience in basebuilding and mobilization

·      Excellent communication skills, oral and written

·      Demonstrated commitment to social/economic justice

·      Self motivated –proven ability to work independently

·      Ability to work well with diverse communities

·      Experience working as a day laborer desired

·      Bilingual in English and Spanish, with the ability to interpret and translate

 

Special Requirements:

The Day Laborer Organizer must be willing to work early morning hours in a fast-paced environment. This position requires hours Mondays-Fridays 8am-12pm. These hours are not flexible. The rest of the time will be flexible depending on the needs and requirements of the job.
