Position: Ecologist and Environmental Educator

Organization: Appalachian Headwaters

Location: Lewisburg, West Virginia

Position Overview:

Appalachian Headwaters is a nonprofit organization focused on environmental education and restoration of native ecosystems in central Appalachia. Appalachian Headwaters creates and supports a wide range of environmental programs, including the Appalachian Pollinator Center: an environmental education and research program focused on the ecology of pollinators and native plants. Appalachian Headwaters’ reforestation program focuses on restoring native forests on former mountaintop removal coal mining sites in central Appalachia. That program is now in the process of establishing native forests and restoring streams on two former mines totaling over 5,000 acres. Our native plant program propagates and grows many of the plants for our pollinator habitat and reforestation projects from seeds and other materials collected from local forests. We operate Camp Waldo, an environmentally focused summer camp for children in our region. We are also expanding our environmental education program in public schools and creating a network to support environmental educators in central Appalachia.

We are hiring an ecologist to help plan and eventually work in our environmental education program with a main goal of extending and managing our citizen science programs focused on Appalachian ecology and environmental issues. The program is based in Lewisburg, WV with some travel to surrounding counties.

Our ideal candidate will have a PhD in ecology, agriculture, horticulture, entomology, forestry, or another relevant field. The candidate must be compatible with our program mission, including a dedication to environmental protection, organic plant growing and restoration of native ecosystems. The candidate should also be able to work closely and respectfully with our members and communities throughout rural West Virginia and Virginia.

Responsibilities:

·     Create and teach environmental education program content related to issues of Appalachian ecology, including native plants and pollinators as well as environmental impacts of human activities on our ecosystem

·     Help develop policies, educational programming, and research projects at the pollinator center

·     Working to develop and strengthen community science programs with regional schools and organizations

·     Ecological data assessment/analysis and collaboration with researchers who may visit our Appalachian Headwaters properties

·     Help support native plant program in the greenhouse and gardens

·     Help support reforestation projects

Qualifications:

·     PhD in ecology, agriculture, forestry, horticulture, entomology or another relevant field

·     Strong environmental ethic

·     Preference for a candidate engaged with environmental policy issues (e.g. climate, deforestation, pollution, environmental degradation)

·     Teaching and public speaking experience preferred
