    Hunger and food insecurity exist in every corner of New Jersey. That’s why a statewide response is critical. Hunger Free New Jersey leads that effort, educating the public and decision-makers about hunger — its causes, its solutions. We mobilize diverse organizations. We work to change policy and practice to ensure that all New Jerseyans have access to healthy food, every day. Hunger Free New Jersey (HFNJ) is a statewide advocacy program of the Center for Food Action (CFA), whose mission is to prevent hunger and homelessness and improve the lives of individuals and families living in poverty.

    MAJOR FUNCTIONS:

    • Support the advancement of the advocacy agenda for HFNJ by effectively framing and disseminating the Hunger Free New Jersey message across all platforms. Collaborate with other HFNJ staff to expand and diversify the core audience and position HFNJ staff as experts and resources on key issues related to hunger and food security. Manage all communications aspects of special outreach and advocacy projects and campaigns.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Establish and maintain strong relationships with media contacts and grow and maintain up-to-date contact lists for traditional and non-traditional media.
    • Research and track media coverage around the issue of hunger and food insecurity and develop appropriate communication strategies to generate publicity and media coverage to increase HFNJ’s network and advance the advocacy agenda.
    • Build content around food insecurity trends and advocacy initiatives; generate information kits, newsletters, action alerts, impact reports and other print and visual supporting materials and serve as a resource on key HFNJ initiatives.
    • Stay current on pending legislation and oversee photo ops and video shoots, as needed.
    • Maintain digital press archive, scan, and organize print mentions and articles.
    • Analyze analytics to inform communication strategies.
    • Manage HFNJ’s website and update with relevant policy and program initiatives.
    • Manage HFNJ’s social media accounts (Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).
    • Manage HFNJ’s email list serves and coordinate communications to our network of partners across the state.
    • Write and distribute HFNJ’s bi-monthly e-newsletter.
    • Coordinate and create reports on participation in federal nutrition programs.
    • Establish and maintain processes for managing scope and objectives during the lifecycle of various outreach projects and advocacy campaigns, managing timelines and workflow.
    • Coordinate project and campaign meetings with statewide and local stakeholders and produce meeting reports and follow up materials.
    • Assumes all other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the NFNJ Director.

    REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    • B.A. or B.S. in Communications, or equivalent education and experience.
    • 3-5 years’ experience in media/publications doing similar work experience as a communications specialist.
    • Ability to create effective and persuasive messaging.
    • Excellent writing and analytical skills.
    • Strong organizational and time management skills.
    • Must be passionate about the organization’s mission and its impact on the community.

    PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

    • Data analytics and reporting experience
    • Experience with Congress Plus and Soft Edge
    • Graphic design

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

    • Must be able to sit for long periods of time.
    • Must have reliable transportation for travel within New Jersey for internal and external meetings.

    Pay: $28.00 - $30.00 per hour
