BACKGROUND AND MISSION

For nearly 30 years, Asian Americans Advancing Justice | Chicago has worked to bring together the Asian American community and create change in our communities. We are deeply committed to grassroots community organizing and we invest in the leadership of grassroots community members through trainings, community education, civic engagement, and collaborative issue-based campaigns. In order to strengthen our work and transform the inequities in our city, state, and Midwest region, we work with multiracial coalitions that emphasize racial equity, accountability to those most impacted, and an infrastructure of grassroots leadership. Our advocacy work focuses on promoting racial, economic, and immigrant justice, including initiatives in the areas of voting rights, language access, and immigrant rights.

As part of the national Asian Americans Advancing Justice affiliation, Advancing Justice | Chicago is a leader in the nationwide Asian American movement. Regionally, Advancing Justice | Chicago is prioritizing the Midwest, and collaborating with partners across the Midwestern states to tackle common struggles and build power.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Asian Americans Advancing Justice | Chicago is seeking a motivated Grant Writer to work in the Development department and report to the Director of Development.

The Grant Writer is a key member of a cross-functional development and communications team, responsible for supporting the organization’s fundraising goals by carrying out all grants processes including, but not limited to, researching and identifying new prospective donors, writing grant proposals and reports, and cultivating positive relationships with funders. This is a great opportunity for an individual with great attention to detail, a passion for persuasive writing and an interest in advancing the work and mission of Asian Americans Advancing Justice | Chicago.

The position requires a self-starter who is creative, takes initiative, and can shepherd a project from conception to execution. Excellent grammar and writing skills are required for this position.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Research, identify and cultivate new funding and grant opportunities from local, regional and national foundations, as well as corporate foundations
  • Write and edit clear, accurate, and persuasive letters of intent, grant proposals, reports, and grant amendments that are tailored to each funder’s focus areas, mission, specifications, and deadlines; collaborate with the Director of Development as a thought partner
  • Ensure grant documents are signed and filed as necessary
  • Collaborate with the Director of Development in an ongoing effort to refine grantmaking systems, processes, and policies to be increasingly transparent, streamlined, and grounded in our organizational values around equity
  • Manage the pipeline of grant opportunities
  • Compile and analyze grant and portfolio data to be reported internally in development meetings and support for fundraising committee meetings and board meetings
  • Collaborate with various departments to request supporting information and documentation, such as program budgets
  • Work with designated organizing staff to set expectations for funding allocated to programs, understand program developments, and update proposals and reports accordingly.
  • Create deliverable tracker for organizing staff to update progress
  • Update and maintain grants tracker with all submission deadlines.
  • Assist with collection, input, and maintenance of donor information in CRM database to ensure records are accurate and up-to-date
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with funding partners in collaboration with Director of Development and Executive Director
  • Work with Development and Communications team on funder communications
  • Facilitate grant meetings with respective staff, including prep meetings for site visits
  • Work with Director of Finance on grant budgets/expenses
  • Stay informed of best practices in the grants management and trends and sharing findings with the broader team

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Candidates must have 2-3 years of grant writing experience at a nonprofit
  • Demonstrated experience with Salesforce/CRM database
  • Excellent writing skills. Ability to write clearly, accurately, concisely and professionally in grant submissions, email correspondence, and other written documentation
  • Exceptional organizational skills. Ability to manage concurrent projects and deadlines and identify priorities in a fast-paced, high-volume, results-oriented work environment
  • Strong attention to detail, particularly with regard to funder specifications and deadlines
  • Strong analytical skills, including an ability to synthesize financial information and program data and communicate conclusions through writing 
  • A deep appreciation for and ability to articulate to diverse audiences, the mission, achievements, and contributions of Advancing Justice | Chicago
  • Excellent collaborator, engaging in cross-department planning and strategy sessions, with exposure to all staff and levels of the organization
  • Resourceful, goal-oriented individual with a strong work ethic, personal integrity and perspective
  • Passion for social justice, racial equity, immigrant rights, and grassroots leadership development
