About Rebuilding Exchange: Rebuilding Exchange (RX) is a social enterprise with a mission to create a market for reclaimed building materials. We do this by diverting materials from landfills and making them accessible for reuse through our retail warehouse, by promoting sustainable deconstruction practices, by providing education and job training programs, and by creating innovative models for sustainable reuse. Rebuilding Exchange was founded in 2008 and is at the cutting edge of social entrepreneurship, with a combination of revenue driving programs and a high-impact job training program.
The Opportunity: The Executive Director will serve as the primary leader and strategist, providing overall management of the organization including business development, fundraising programs, operations, and financial management for a budget of over $1 million. As an entrepreneurial leader, the Executive Director will shape the next phase of growth for the organization, growing the enterprise and scaling impact in the area of waste reduction and job re-entry, and may include the expansion of the organization’s geographic footprint. The Executive Director will steward relationships with the Board, partners, community stakeholders and the Rebuilding Exchange network to drive support for organizational programs and mission impact. The Executive Director will steward a strong culture, one that is diverse and inclusive, inspiring staff to reach the highest standards of performance.
Strategic, Entrepreneurial and Visionary Leadership: The Executive Director is a strategic and entrepreneurial leader able to develop a vision for Rebuilding Exchange’s next chapter while executing on current priorities. Comfortable developing relationships with diverse stakeholders, they will embrace the ‘hands-on’ nature of role. They can develop and promote the strategies needed to advance the work of a social enterprise, from earned income to fundraising to mission delivery. They can develop a strong working relationship with the staff and successfully leverage the skills of the Board of Directors, while working closely with the organization’s various stakeholders to drive impact. They actively and strategically seek out partnerships and build coalitions to advance organizational mission and priorities. They have the drive and passion to position Rebuilding Exchange at the forefront of the sector by staying ahead of trends, anticipating new challenges and positioning Rebuilding Exchange to proactively respond to them. The Executive Director has experience working in the areas of construction, salvage, recycling, urban planning, architecture or a related field.
A Passionate Ambassador and Fundraiser for Rebuilding Exchange: The Executive Director is the public face of Rebuilding Exchange, sharing its mission and vision with the outside world and helping to increase the organization’s visibility. They are flexible, energetic, positive, creative and ambitious and experienced in establishing strong working relationships in furtherance of an organization’s mission. They exemplify leadership and inspire trust and confidence across a diverse range of stakeholders. They develop a powerful sense of shared purpose in others and motivate them to engage in the work of Rebuilding Exchange. They enjoy building new programs, fundraising and can enthusiastically convey Rebuilding Exchange’s goals to existing and potential new customers, partners, and donors.
Nonprofit Management: The Executive Director is an executive with strong staff and operational management experience. They have a track record of sound financial planning, oversight and accountability, with the ability to clearly communicate financial status to the Board of Directors. They will bring experience building and leading high performing teams and guiding team members’ growth and development. The Executive Director possesses the ability to inspire staff, volunteers and program delivery partners with a diverse set of skills, and provide a productive, inclusive work environment and professional growth opportunities that result in team cohesion. They understand the importance of a robust partnership with the Board of Directors and will ensure fiduciary responsibility and sound financial management practices and accountability to the Board of Directors. They will also ensure that the Board of
Directors is achieving its primary responsibilities of best practice governance and fundraising.
