BROOKLYN DEFENDER SERVICES - FAMILY DEFENSE PRACTICE

SEEKS STAFF ATTORNEY TO REPRESENT CLIENTS IN CUSTODY,VISITATION, FAMILY OFFENSE, AND PATERNITY CASES

Brooklyn Defender Services (“BDS”) is one of the largest public defense offices in the country. BDS provides innovative, interdisciplinary, and client-centered criminal, family, and immigration defense, as well as civil legal services, social work support and advocacy to tens of thousands of clients in Brooklyn every year. BDS represents clients who have diverse, complex and multi-faceted needs in a high volume and fast-paced setting.

 Family Defense Practice

BDS's Family Defense Practice (FDP) represents low-income parents in child welfare cases in Brooklyn Family Court. Our mission is to fight again the unnecessary removal of children from their families and when that is not possible, to advocate for families to be reunified quickly. FDP defends parents' due process rights by fighting unwarranted state intervention in their lives. Using a holistic and interdisciplinary approach, our diverse teams of attorneys and social workers help families obtain the benefits and services they need to keep their families safe and stable. Central to our mission is advocating for systemic change in the family court and child welfare systems. Client representation includes frequent contested hearings, discovery and motion practice, as well as out of court advocacy and settlement negotiations. Staff attorneys work closely with staff social workers and parent advocates to provide inter-disciplinary representation that includes assistance on related legal matters, such as housing, immigration, public benefits and domestic violence.

Job Description:

FDP seeks an admitted attorney to represent clients in collateral cases that arise in child welfare proceedings, including custody and visitation, family offense, and paternity proceedings. The staff attorney will work closely with the existing custody attorney, as well as Article 10 attorneys on cases that involve these collateral issues. The attorney will represent clients at trials when the proceedings become contested or are no longer related to the underlying abuse or neglect proceeding. In addition, the attorney will be available for consultation with staff attorneys as collateral Family Court issues arise during the pendency of clients’ Article 10 cases.

 Qualifications:

Candidates are expected to be admitted to the NYS Bar and have excellent litigation and written and oral communication skills. The staff attorney should have experience in custody/visitation, family offense, and paternity cases and be interested and willing to specialize in these areas. The attorney must feel comfortable working in a fast-paced litigation environment and being part of a team of advocates working together to best serve our clients. All staff attorneys are expected to provide high-quality and vigorous representation at all court appearances and throughout the course of a case. Spanish speaking attorneys are strongly preferred.

Salary is based on year of graduation from law school.
