IRIS (Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services, Inc., www.irisct.org) is a dynamic refugee resettlement agency in New Haven CT. IRIS serves people from all over the world who have fled persecution in their home countries to start new lives and become self-sufficient, contributing members of their new communities. While IRIS has traditionally focused on helping refugees, it is increasingly serving a more diverse immigrant population.

IRIS is looking for a part-time (20-25 hours a week) After School Program Coordinator to lead, organize, and teach in the IRIS After School Program. This position averages 20-25 hours a week.

General Description 

The IRIS After School Academics program currently serves approximately 35 refugee and immigrant students, ages 8-14, who come from eight different countries and speak ten different languages. We meet every day after school for academic tutoring, which includes homework help, community building, and arts and music education, all in an English-language rich and emotionally supportive environment. The IRIS After School (IAS) Program is currently seeking a new program coordinator or co-program coordinators for on-boarding over the summer leading into the next school year.


It is essential that the person hired for this position be vaccinated against COVID-19 and comfortable coming into contact with other people. 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities include: 

• Responsibility for the safety and well-being of elementary and middle-school students every afternoon 

• Curriculum building, from a vision for overall learning to the nitty-gritty of a weekly schedule

• Helping students individually or in small groups with homework and English language practice

• Teaching an arts or special interest class 

• Managing and coordinating a large number of volunteers and interns

• Coordinating logistics of the program, including transportation

• Enrolling students and working with IRIS case managers to do so equitably

• Building supportive relationships with and among students

• Creating a safe and loving space for self-expression 

Desired qualifications: 

• Experience in childhood education

• Personal or professional experience with immigration-related issues

• Trauma-informed and culturally competent perspective and training

• Proficiency in at least one of these languages in addition to English: Arabic, Pashto, Dari, Swahili, Farsi, Spanish

• Passion about and experience in music / the arts

 • Ability to multitask in a sometimes stressful and fast-paced environment

• Commitment to anti-racism

• Energy and enthusiasm for working with children 

Salary: $20-21.50 /hour, commensurate with experience
