OVERVIEW

The Senior Communications Officer will coordinate our internal and external communications to highlight solutions for refugees, displaced persons, and migrants, and raise them to the attention of the public, policy makers and organizations of influence. This position will report to the Vice President of Strategic Development and work closely with the other Communications Officers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

•    Collaborate with management and the strategic development team to develop and implement an effective communications strategy based on our target audience and USCRI mission;

•    Respond to media inquiries, arrange interviews, and act as a spokesperson for the organization;

•    Conduct outreach to print and electronic media, editing of USCRI stories, assist in the production of communications and information materials, and arrange public appearances and speaking engagements for USCRI Board and staff;

•    Write, edit, and distribute content, including publications, press releases, op-eds, web content, annual reports, speeches, and other marketing material that communicates the organization's activities, products and/or services;

•    Establish and maintain effective relationships with journalists and maintain a media database;

•    Contribute to material for social media platforms and USCRI network websites;

•    Seek opportunities to enhance the reputation of the agency, and coordinate publicity events as required;

•    Ensure consistency of USCRI branding on all print and social media communications;

•    Administer the USCRI website, including site infrastructure and content maintenance, updates, and hosting contract;

•    Maintain records of media coverage and collate analytics and metrics; and

•    Perform other job-related duties as assigned by supervisor.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

•    Familiarity with international refugee/human rights laws and standards and general refugee issues, concepts and trends is required;

•    A degree in relevant field preferred, including journalism, communications, international relations, international development, public relations or the social sciences is desirable;

•    Minimum of 5 years of experience with media and communications work is essential;

•    Knowledge of marketing, advertising, and promotional communications;

•    Demonstrated experience in refugee work overseas and/or domestic resettlement is a plus;

•    Excellent writing, editing and oral communications skills across all media platforms;

•    Familiarity with Microsoft Office and web content management system software is required; experience with WordPress is a plus;

•    Proficient in social media strategies;

•    Networking and relationship-building skills, including excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to work and foster multi-cultural teamwork and strong engagement;

•    Must be a self-starter with sound judgment, knowledge, curiosity, creativity, integrity and dedication to the human rights of refugees, immigrants, asylum seekers and displaced people.

•    Exceptional time management and attention to detail; and

•    Demonstrated support of USCRI’s values by exhibiting respect for others, maintenance of confidential information and an appreciation of a multicultural workplace.

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS


•    Satisfactory completion of USCRI’s Orientation and Training;

•    Complete additional training as identified by the supervisor or Human Resources.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

•    Use of manual dexterity, tactile, visual, and audio acuity;

•    Use of repetitive motion, prolonged periods of sitting and standing, and sustained visual and mental applications and demands; and

•    Occasional lifting (up to 50 pounds), bending, pulling, and carrying; and
