    Job Synopsis

    The national MCC Thrift shop coordinator initiates extensive contact internally with MCC U.S. and Regional Donor Relations and externally with MCC Thrift shop constituents, volunteers, boards, and staff to provide vision and leadership to carry out the MCC Thrift shop mission. The person in this role communicates orally, in written form, and through public speaking. Additionally, this individual regularly uses persuasion, discretion and influence in navigating relationships with MCC Thrift shop managers and boards. Fundamental skills necessary to perform the job well include problem-solving and the ability to educate and share information with clarity. The national MCC Thrift shop coordinator works very closely with U.S. regional MCC Thrift staff and with Canadian national and provincial MCC Thrift staff.

    Essential:

    • Bachelors degree in Business or related degree.
    • 1-3 years thrift shop experience, related retail, or related business experience.
    • Certificate of Nonprofit Board Consulting (or willingness to obtain certificate during first year of employment) by BoardSource (or equivalent).

    Employment eligibility: Legally eligible to work in the U.S. MCC offers of employment are subject to a successful criminal background check(s).

    Preferred:

    • Masters degree
    • 3-5 years thrift shop experience or other retail or related business experience.

    Specific Tasks and Duties:

    Fundraising Development

    • Visioning for new long-term business opportunities and new store opportunities resulting in increased income to MCC.
    • Increase income to MCC through identifying critical factors for growth and executing them to create more profitable MCC Thrift shops. Evaluating ongoing financial data to identify strengths and weaknesses. Monitoring specific shop decisions and the possible consequences to MCC income and budgeting.
    • Teaching best business practices in the areas of retail management and donation acceptance and processing to U.S. regional staff and MCC Thrift shop staff.
    • Influencing boards to investigate opportunities for change, identify threats and opportunities and to make quality choices for the use of all resources (financial, human, property, etc.).
    • Enhancing the environment of shops to promote better working conditions to attract volunteers and customers.
    • Marketing the MCC mission and the mission of the shops by: supporting signage that tells about the mission, encouraging regional offices to place MCC shops on the front-line of information.
    • Provide feedback and ideas to the U.S. Communications and Donor Relations networks on promotional and marketing initiatives.

    Education Training Supervision

    • Provide regular support for and foster the on-going development of regional MCC Thrift staff.
    • Provide support for and encourage board development by creating MCC Thrift shop specific resources for boards.
    • Developing and conducting board development workshops. Providing opportunities for boards to network with each other.
    • Encouraging and advising through personal contacts including phone, e-mail and correspondence.
    • Encourage and support the work of MCC Thrift shop volunteers. Develop Resources for recruiting, retaining and acknowledging volunteers.
    • Impact volunteers/constituents by providing MCC information and resources.
    • Promote the mission of MCC, by connecting MCC alumni, returning workers and speakers to the MCC Thrift shop network.
    • Acknowledge the impact that Thrift Shop volunteers have on the work of MCC.

    Relationship building/networking

    • Provide support and guidance for shop managers by: Organizing and implementing training through workshops, seminars and conferences.
    • Depending on the successful applicant’s skills and background, the U.S. Coordinator may take the lead on this on behalf of both U.S. and Canada. Developing opportunities for managers to network with each other. Encouraging and advising through personal contacts including phone, e-mail and mail correspondence. Maintain a strong team of regional thrift staff. Participate on the search committee for regional MCC Thrift positions.
    • Serve on regional MCC Thrift shop umbrella boards.
    • Maintain collaborative relationship with Canadian network

    Administrative Planning

    • Help develop and guide MCC Thrift shop work in regions by working closely with and through regional assigned staff. Help develop and help execute national thrift shop promotions and campaigns. Strengthen and support the MCC Thrift shop network in collaboration with the Canadian network through the efforts such as the following: Bi-National workshops, monthly e-newsletters for managers and board members, helping to direct maintenance of current information on website, consumer-facing e-mail newsletters, list of MCC Thrift shops in the U.S., and social media.

    Other duties as assigned on a temporary basis

    Supervision: No Direct Supervisory Responsibilities

    Travel expectations: Up to 25% travel with less than 30 nights away per year. Travel is within the US with occasional international travel to Canada or learning tours.

    Physical Activity/Demands: Occasionally moving about to accomplish tasks or move from one worksite to another. Light work that includes moving objects up to 20 pounds. Operating motor vehicles or heavy equipment. Assessing the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of work assigned. Occasional exposure to the following environmental conditions, Low temperatures. High temperatures. Outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind. Noisy Environment. Hazardous conditions. Poor Ventilation. Small and/or enclosed spaces. Occasional tours of thrift shops which may involve some of these environments. Constant remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time. Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.

    Environmental conditions: There is occasional exposure to the following environmental conditions during thrift shop tours: Low temperatures, High temperatures, Outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind, Noisy Environments, Hazardous conditions, Poor Ventilation, and Small and/or enclosed spaces.

    Salary Details

    Base salary: $63,811.45. Starting salary may be adjusted up to $70,901.61 based on previous experience and higher in certain cities with higher cost of living.
