Readiness on the Road is a free school readiness program funded by the Children and Families Commission of Orange County. We currently provide free school readiness classes and parenting classes for families of preschoolers at five locations in Orange County, with ten new sites to come this fall!
In our "We Learn Together" classes, parents (or other caregiver) work with their child on learning activities under the direction of the Readines on the Road staff. Caregivers learn different types of activities that they can recreate in their home that will help prepare their child for school. By participating in "We Learn Together", caregivers can develop an even more loving, teaching relationship with their child.
The Parent Education classes focus on health education and parenting skills. Community agencies and programs such as Lean Start and CUIDAR present on these and other topics of interest to parents. School Readiness Nurses conduct health screenings such as hearing, vision, and dental on children to identify hidden health problems that can interfere with a child's ability to learn. Parents also receive information and/or referrals from these community partners, as well as the Readiness on the Road staff, for any additional health, educational, and/or social services needed.
Translation is available for Spanish, Vietnamese, and Korean speaking families. Although we have no eligibility requirements, priority is given to families with the most need (ex: need parenting skills training, have a child with special needs, cannot afford preschool, etc).
While not all children can go to preschool before attending kindergarten, parents and other caregivers can teach a child effectively at home. Readiness on the Road is here to show them how!
