The Batonga Foundation
- District of Columbia
The Batonga Foundation is 501 (c)(3) nonprofit founded by Grammy Award-winning West African singer, songwriter, and UNICEF International Goodwill Ambassador, Angelique Kidjo.
Our mission is to equip the hardest-to-reach girls and women with knowledge and skills to be agents of change in their own lives and communities. We envision a safer, healthier and more equitable world in which all girls and women can thrive. We are headquartered in Washington DC and work in partnership with community based organizations in Benin.
Since beginning operations in 2007, Batonga has reached young women and girls in 5 African countries with support that goes beyond formal education: we aim to identify those hardest-to-reach and address the unique barriers that girls face and equip them with the social and financial tools they need to thrive. We have provided over 5,000 academic years of education, worked with our partners to bring 200,000 pairs of shoes to the poorest school children in Benin and have provided bathroom facilities and libraries for thousands of students.
