About Us

Established in 1986 by world-renown primatologist and conservationist Dr. Birute Mary Galdikas, Orangutan Foundation International's mission is to support the conservation, protection, and understanding of orangutans and their rainforest habitat while caring for wild-born, ex-captive orangutan orphans as they make their way back to the forest. Orangutan Foundation International (OFI) is dedicated to ensuring the survival of biologically-viable orangutan populations in the wild and safeguarding the welfare of orangutans wherever they are found.

Our field work takes place in Central Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo and involves a multi-pronged approach, including: (1) animal rescue, rehabilitation, repatriation and protection; (2) conservation education and research; and (3) rainforest habitat protection, acquisition and restoration.

OFI is a U.S. 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Los Angeles, California and works closely with staff, volunteers, donors and members from all around the globe, as well as three 'sister organizations' in Australia, Canada, and Borneo. OFI President Dr. Biruté Mary Galdikas' lifelong devotion to rescuing and nurturing orphaned orangutans and giving them a second chance to grow up and be wild is the subject of the award-winning Warner Brothers IMAX film, Born to be Wild.
