The Independent Commission on NYC Criminal Justice and Incarceration Reform

New York, NY | www.morejustnyc.org

About Us

The Independent Commission on New York City Criminal Justice and Incarceration Reform seeks to help the City of New York move towards closing the jail complex on Rikers Island, improve the functioning of the criminal justice system, reduce the use of unnecessary incarceration, and encourage the development of state-of-the-art, borough-based jail facilities. The Commission is chaired by former Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman and comprised of two dozen civic leaders, experts, and advocates from a variety of backgrounds, including law enforcement, academia, the judiciary, social services, advocacy groups, business, and those who have spent time behind bars.

The Commission was convened at the request of New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and issued its evidence-based blueprint for improving New York City’s criminal justice system, A More Just New York City, in April 2017. Today, in partnership with other key organizations, the Commission continues to provide policymakers with the tools and roadmaps they need to implement its recommendations.
