Community Homeworks is a 501(c)(3) Non Profit organization with a focus area of Kalamazoo County, Michigan. Its mission is empowering our low-income neighbors to maintain safe, sustainable, and dignified homes.
We know that low-income families face many challenges and we believe that one of the first steps to moving forward is working to create a more stable and sustainable home environment. Often that starts with addressing critical repairs that a homeowner is not able to afford. But at Community Homeworks we are committed to connecting homeowners to resources and opportunities to make more lasting change.
Our education workshops are designed to give homeowners the basic knowledge and skills they need to take more control over their home environment. But it isn’t just information – for many of our participants, this is the first time they’ve been in a learning environment in a long time. Confidence, curiosity, and the sense of connection and community have been life-changing for some of our families.
The combination of low income with the high costs of heating and cooling an old inefficient home is a fundamental challenge in our community. Making the investment in whole-house weatherization creates real and long-lasting change in the affordability and sustainability of the home, and contributes directly to the financial security and well-being of the family. The savings are real – the weatherization projects we have completed to date will save these families more than $1 million over the next 10 years. That’s money that can be used for other essential needs, such as food, school supplies or medical expenses.
