  • Mission

The Tees Women Poets support women of all backgrounds in the Tees Valley to build personal & professional skills through writing and performing poetry. Operating since 2011 but newly a charity, we need a good treasurer to keep us right. We are not a stuffy charity! We are a bunch of fun, funny, creative, passionate, and widely-networked women who love the arts and what they can do for society. Not all of us are poets, we have artist-advisors or 'Guardians' who join meetings and bring that expertise; but we are all creative in our own ways and believe in the power of creativity to change and heal lives. We are also intersectional feminists; inclusive of trans and gender non-conforming communities, working class, neurodiverse and disabled voices, survivors, and looking to connect more with communities of colour. We care about both craft, and community.

    About Us

You will help us help up to 200 women a year find their voices, and their confidence,; process their challenges and stories, take up space and become truly themselves. Our participants have gone on to start their own cultural events, build businesses as creative writing tutors and therapists, set up their own residencies in community venues, win competitions, have books published, and have even performed poetry at the United Nations in Geneva.

We run free and accessible writing workshops, in person and online events, performance boot camps for emerging poets, outreach projects for people with lived experience of disadvantage, and internal training for new poetry teachers, We produce digital and print anthologies, film-poems, live performance pieces, festival street theatre, and spoken word albums. With our network of cultural and civic partners, we offer paid opportunities for women to advance their creative careers through residencies and commissions.
