About Us

FHSSA’s mission is to support organizations in their development and provision of hospice and palliative care initiatives in sub-Saharan Africa.

FHSSA’s vision is for all people who are affected by HIV/AIDS to have access to and to receive quality palliative and end-of-life care.

FHSSA was incorporated in 1999 to help generate resources and technical support for hospice organizations in sub-Saharan Africa. Its early efforts centered around establishing the Partnership Initiative that matched U.S. hospices with individual African hospice programs to form mutually beneficial relationships between the organizations, and raising money to provide direct grants to hospices in Africa. In August 2004 FHSSA joined with the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and moved its offices from Syracuse, New York to Alexandria, Virginia. FHSSA’s work now helps to complement the work of NHPCO’s International Programs which focus on forming Global Partnerships. These Partnerships are intended to provide on-going support and mutual advancement of hospice and palliative care internationally, and to provide education and support to programs and professionals in other countries. Currently, FHSSA’s efforts are focused on advancing partnerships and collaboration between U.S. and international organizations in support of palliative care.
