The foundation is headed by Venerable Dr. Omalpe Sobhita Thero, one of the highest monks in Theravada Buddhism. His work focusses on raising the socio-economic status and wholistic health of not only one of the poorest areas in Sri Lanka, Embilipitiya, but reaches to the northern Tamil region as well.
The foundation runs over 60 projects. Our newly opened Visaka Home is a home for young, teenage mom's and moms to be to give birth and raise their children. The home creates a family/community atmosphere for the girls and their children and build a life of sustainance. In the Home, they work together, learn skills for child care, work and living, get medical care, counseling, spiritual counseling, become a part of the larger foundation programs and grow.
Typically in Sri Lanka, these girls would be ostracized and sent out of their communities and generally become trafficked or become part of the juvenile justice system and separated from their children. Here, they stay with their children, create a loving environment, learn to raise them and while learnomg how to support them and re-integrate as a vital part of society.
There are currently 9 girls, 6 babies and 3 of the girls are pregnant. There are two more houses on the property where the home is located that we want to renovate in order to house more girls and have alternative activity space. Then, we want to scale these homes to open them throughout the region and country. Currently, this is the only home of its kind that is associated with a Buddhist temple and the second home for those girls in all of Sri Lanka. The needs are great! This is one of the ways that the foundation's programs enable these young people to be self-sufficient and not be trafficked.
Trafficking is a major issue in Sri Lanka with over 40,000 people going to the Middle East each year and very few able to return to Sri Lanka. Like with the pregnant teenagers, suicide is usually quite high amongst these folks as well. The programs that the high priest, Venerable Dr. Omalpe Sobhita, has created impact some of the very causes of the poverty cycle from creating bi-lingual education to providing means for improving nutrition and farming with their extensive cow release program to job training programs, an orphanage, after school help, medical programs, counseling...
