About Us

The Alice Ferguson Foundation (AFF) was established in 1954 as a nonprofit environmental and agricultural education center in Prince George’s County, Maryland. AFF’s mission is to connect people to the natural world, sustainable agricultural practices and the cultural heritage of their local watershed through education, stewardship and advocacy.

AFF operates Hard Bargain Farm Environmental Center, a 330-acre working farm with agricultural fields, forests, wetlands, a living shoreline, a new educational “Living Building,” an overnight lodge, barns with farm animals, a Children’s Garden, and Tool Museum.Bridging the Watershed is an environmental education program of AFF in partnership with the National Park Service and area schools, which provides hands-on outdoor studies in state and national parks. AFF also provides Teacher Institutes and Workshops that provide professional development for K-12 teachers through environmental science, curriculum-based lessons through summer institutes and workshops.AFF’s Trash Free Potomac Watershed Initiative works to create a lasting reduction of litter in the Potomac watershed through community education and litter prevention activities, including the Potomac River Watershed Cleanup which engaged 23,000 volunteers in 2015.
