About Us

CHILDREN’S MUSEUM & THEATRE OF MAINE exists to inspire discovery and imagination through exploration and play. The Museum & Theatre serves as an indispensable resource for families and educators, helping to create a broad community devoted to children's development and learning.

·        The Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine is a hands-on, interactive learning environment with exhibits designed for children 1-10 years old.

·        Our main stage Theatre productions include cast and crew members ages 8 to 17. Shows are enjoyed by audiences of all ages.

OUR RICH HISTORY

The Children's Theatre of Maine was founded in 1923, and is the oldest continuously operating children's theatre in the U.S. The Children's Museum of Maine was founded in 1976. The Theatre and Museum merged in 2008 to form the Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine, the only combined children's museum and children's theatre in the U.S performing for children, by children.

OUR FUTURE

The Museum & Theatre is growing and expanding: The Museum & Theatre will be building a new home at Thompson’s Point, Portland Maine.

This, purpose-built, state-of-the-art, 30,000 square foot complex will feature innovative and interactive exhibits, a 100-seat children’s theatre, outdoor play areas, community green spaces, expanded parking and enhanced access for visitors of all abilities.

The re-imagined Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine will serve as both a community hub and an educational resource to support not only children but parents and caregivers, as well. Utilizing an educational framework based upon play, family, and inclusivity, the Museum & Theatre will continue to focus on four key content areas: early Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) learning; multicultural; arts; and early childhood education.

The Museum & Theatre will remain open at its current location (142 Free St.) in downtown Portland until construction at Thompson’s Point is completed.

OUR EXHIBITS

Three floors of exhibits allow plenty of room to explore and discover. Discover Our Town on our first floor, where kids can play dozens of different roles in our mini-community. They can save the day in our fire truck, milk a cow or count eggs in our farm, shop for healthy foods at the farmer’s market, or pull in the catch of the day on our lobster boat. Our first floor also features a toddler area for our youngest visitors, a ball exhibit exploring the science of motion, and rotating exhibits in the Big Gallery.

On the second floor, visit the Discovery Woods exhibit, where you can climb Mt. Kid-ta-din, pack-a-backpack, build your own shelter, make a splash in Cascade Stream, visit the Ranger Station, and identify leaves and animals you would find in the Maine woods. Our domed space shuttle is equipped with space suits and guided star shows led by our educators. Downstairs, imagination reigns! Kids can try out our working puppet theatre, or get into dress-up costumes and tell their story on our stage - with curtains, sound effects, and working flood lights! After the show, they can stop by a diner, where they can scoop some play ice cream or try out the pretend milkshake machine! In the warmer months, literacy comes to life outside with Down to the Sea with Mr. Magee: An Outdoor Adventure featuring the children’s book by Chris Van Dusen. Last but not least is the unique, periscopic Camera Obscura. Visitors old and young marvel at this exhibit, which offers a panoramic view of the city - from inside a room with no windows.
