San Francisco Beacon Initiative
The mission of the San Francisco Beacon Initiative is to transform public schools into youth and family centers that become beacons of activity for the surrounding neighborhoods. Drawing on the existing wealth in our communities, Beacon Centers create pathways to lifelong learning through which young people and adults can always find the next challenge or step in their process of learning, growth, and development. Our partners include a diverse coalition of stakeholders: community-based organizations (YMCA, Richmond District Neighborhood Center, Real Options for City Kids, and others), private foundations (Haas, Jr. Fund, The United Way, SF Foundation, Kaiser Permanente, Stone Foundation, and others), the San Francisco Department of Children, Youth, and Their Families (DCYF), and the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD). Our joint work is to develop Beacons Centers that offer unique supports and opportunities for youth, families, and the entire community in six core areas: academics, career development, arts and recreation, leadership, health, and technology. These services are available before school, during the school day, after school, on weekends and during summer in the San Francisco neighborhoods of Bayview/Hunter's Point, Mission, Western Addition, North Beach/Chinatown, Visitacion Valley, OMI/Excelsior, Sunset, and Richmond.
