About Us

Founded in 1972, A.R.T./New York is the leading service and advocacy organization for New York City’s 400+ nonprofit theatres, with a mission to assist member theatres in managing their companies effectively so that they may realize their rich artistic visions and serve their diverse audiences well. A.R.T./New York’s 410+ member theatre companies – from Pregones/PRTT in the Bronx, to Lincoln Center Theater, to National Black Theatre in Harlem, to Theater Breaking Through Barriers, Target Margin Theater in Brooklyn and Pan Asian Repertory Theatre – are the heart of the organization. A.R.T./New York provides subsidized office and rehearsal space at Spaces@520 in midtown Manhattan and South Oxford Space in Fort Greene, Brooklyn; subsidized performance space at the A.R.T./New York Theatres; funding through grant and loan programs; training through workshops and peer roundtables; and convenings for the field with a special focus on the needs of small nonprofit theatres. These programs, along with advocacy efforts, have positioned A.R.T./New York as a thought-leader in the New York theatre community and the arts citywide. Over the years, A.R.T./New York has received numerous honors, including an Obie Award, an Innovative Theatre Award, a New York City Mayor’s Award for Arts & Culture, and a Tony Honor for Excellence in the Theatre.

Over the past three years, A.R.T./New York has launched a number of new initiatives in grant-making and education programs designed to address the needs of the field, including Diversifying Our Organizations, an effort to strengthen and diversify nonprofit theatres and their boards through cohort-based education and field research; Access A.R.T./New York, a program designed to educate the field and create access for artists, administrators, and audience members with disabilities; and Body Autonomy, a new set of programs and partnerships that strive to end harassment in the theatre profession. A.R.T./New York was selected by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to administer the most recent cycle of the Andrew W. Mellon New York Theater Program, which provides critical multi-year funding to 36 theatre companies.
