  • Mission

The Somali Bantu Association of America (SBAOA) serves refugees, immigrants, and similarly vulnerable groups in City Heights who experience substantial barriers to financial, cultural, and social integration into American society. Our programming includes community support initiatives, language services, education, job skills training, which increase the likelihood of gainful employment, and vital support services and resources.

    About Us

The Somali Bantu Association of America (SBAOA) is seeking dedicated volunteers to support refugee and immigrant communities in San Diego. We need help with several key programs. Our food pantry operates every second Wednesday of the month and every Thursday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, and volunteers assist with sorting, packing, distributing food, managing check-in, and clean-up. Volunteers are also needed for our ESL classes, helping adult learners improve English reading, writing, and conversation skills-no teaching experience required. Additional help is needed with daily office operations, including welcoming visitors, organizing files, prepping materials, and general admin support. Those interested in social work or law can assist with immigration and social services, supporting clients with forms, translation, and intake during legal aid sessions. Language skills in Pashto, Dari, Somali, Swahili, Arabic, Spanish, or Vietnamese are a plus but not required. Volunteering with SBAOA offers a chance to give back, earn service hours, gain valuable experience, and make a lasting difference in our community.
