About Us

A New Way of Life Reentry Project is a grassroots, nonprofit organization founded in 1998 as a sober living home for women by Susan Burton, a former prisoner who understands the challenges that women face leaving prison. A New Way of Life Reentry Project’s mission is to help women and girls break the cycle of entrapment in the criminal justice system and lead healthy and satisfying lives. To date, over 350 formerly incarcerated women have had their lives transformed by our programs. We have expanded our capacity steadily over the years, and now operate 5 sober living houses in Watts and Compton.

We also provide comprehensive services to help women and their children find a stable footing in life. In 2008, we were able to provide housing and services to 50 formerly incarcerated women and 16 children.

The goals of A New Way of Life Reentry Project are to provide a clean, safe, sober-living home environment where formerly incarcerated women and their children can feel welcomed and supported in their transition to becomeing independent members of the community; to offer education, job trianing, and skill-building opportunities for women to prepare them for self-sufficiency; and to provide leadership as a community advocate for the rights of women inmates and formerly incarcerated women, as well as their families.
