About Us

A New Way of Life Reentry Project is a grassroots, nonprofit organization founded in 1998 as a sober living home for women by Susan Burton, a formerly incarcerated individual who understands the challenges that women face leaving prison. A New Way of Life Reentry Project’s mission is to help women and girls break the cycle of entrapment in the criminal justice system and lead healthy and satisfying lives. To date, over 1,200 formerly incarcerated individuals have found safety and support in our safe homes. Over 400 residents have been reunited with their children. We have expanded our capacity steadily over the years and now operate 10 SAFE homes in Los Angeles County.

The goals of A New Way of Life Reentry Project are to provide a clean, safe, sober-living environment where formerly incarcerated residents and their children can feel welcomed and supported in their transition to becoming independent members of the community; to offer education, job training, and skill-building opportunities for individuals to prepare them for self-sufficiency; and to provide leadership as a community advocate for the rights of formerly incarcerated people, as well as their families.
