About Us

The Greenway Foundation is a Denver-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has led efforts, since 1974, to reclaim the South Platte River and its tributaries from a virtual cesspool to a place of environmental and recreational pride. South Platte River Environmental Education (SPREE) is the education arm of The Greenway Foundation.

For over 40 years, The Greenway Foundation has introduced tens of thousands of children to the South Platte River through its SPREE program. SPREE aims to develop a positive relationship between the South Platte River and Denver area citizens through school excursions, weekend events, and day camps.

SPREE offers seven grade-specific field trips for students in ECE through 5th grade, each at a different public park along the South Platte River. We provide opportunities for children to have fun and learn by the river while school is out at our Summer Camp and School Break Camps. Additionally, we have fun, free, and family-focused events throughout the year, so students and their families can get outside together.
