Save the Mountain
Save the Mountain is a grass-roots organization committed to the preservation of the Mt. Holyoke range. It was formed in 1999 to block a proposed real estate development in Hadley, MA, on the slope of Mount Holyoke. This development would not only have had a negative impact on the rural nature of the village of Hockanum, it would have ruined the view from the historic Summit House, much of Skinner State Park, and the Pioneer Valley. It would also have caused severe stress to the local ecosystem and environment, which is home to at least two endangered species.
Fortunately, after 13 months of organizing, the state took title to the land (after a generous private donation funded the purchase) and it was protected forever.
