My Own Book

My Own Book Fund, a non-profit that supports children's literacy through book ownership, is looking for volunteers. The program brings 3^rd graders from schools in disadvantaged neighborhoods throughout the five boroughs to bookstores and lets each child pick out $60 worth of books of their choosing to begin their own home library. Volunteers meet with 3rd grade classes, prep the students on how to pick a book that's right for them and accompany them on their shopping trip to the bookstore. Volunteering at one school requires a time commitment of roughly six mornings in total over a two-month period. It's a perfect fit for those who love books and kids.
