The National Housing Institute
The National Housing Institute/Shelterforce is a small, progressive, independent nonprofit communications and education organization founded in 1975 and driven by a belief in the ability of all communities to be healthy and thriving. NHI/Shelterforce supports community revitalization to empower residents of low-income neighborhoods by strengthening the work of community builders. NHI does this primarily through Shelterforce and its associated online content, as well as reports, workshops, and convenings. Shelterforce is the only national independent publication written for advocates and professionals dedicated to community development in such areas as housing, jobs, transportation, education, health, environment, civic engagement and other social justice sectors.
NHI/Shelterforce also publishes the e-newsletter Shelterforce Weekly and has conducted original research on such topics as shared-equity homeownership, managing neighborhood change, saving subsidized housing, homelessness prevention, and creating jobs as a component of affordable-housing construction. Operating at the intersection of theory, practice, and policy, NHI examines how these and other factors affect people as they build safe, viable neighborhoods.
