Refoundry is an innovative startup not-for-profit in criminal/social justice with a mission to break cycles of poverty and incarceration by providing people returning from incarceration with the opportunity to achieve financial independence, become leaders and job providers, and build healthier communities. Our long-term paid training program includes critical life skills development, and begins with teaching formerly incarcerated people to repurpose discarded materials into home furnishings and mentors participants into their own business or career-track job.
In two pilots in we helped Refoundry Entrepreneurs launch 10 businesses in Los Angeles and New York that employ 125 people from their home communities. No one served returned to prison, and all are off most forms of public support. Each Refoundry graduate saves tax payers an estimated $100K per year.
Refoundry Entrepreneurs-in-Training sell the products and services they create in the program, with proceeds covering their living-wage salaries. The program features three off-ramps: Placement in living-wage employment after three months; placement in a career-track job in their field of choice after seven months, and business ownership for those who complete the full program.
The young organization has been recognized as a thought leader, and featured in national media.
Refoundry is now raising funds to launch full programming to serve 60 people per year in both New York and Los Angeles by early summer 2019, with plans to scale to other cities.
