About Us

The Frontline Workers Counseling Project (FWCP) is an award-winning Bay Area-based charitable organization that connects frontline workers with free high-quality psychotherapy and support groups.

We serve all who were frontline or essential workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, regardless of employment, insurance, or citizenship status.

Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, the FWCP’s founders, Dr. Elizabeth Rawson and Dr. Michael Levin, recognized that frontline workers urgently needed access to psychotherapy and many psychotherapists wanted to help, but there was no platform available to connect them. Further, frontline workers needed a tailor-made solution that took into account the barriers that frequently impede their access to mental health care. These include: lack of free time during typical business hours; shifting work schedules that require a flexible therapy schedule; stigma about needing help; reticence to accept help as helpers themselves; concerns about privacy, particularly with insurance-based or employer-based treatment; and worry that receiving help could endanger their licensure or job.

Within a few weeks of the FWCP’s founding in March 2020 as the COVID-19 Pro Bono Counseling Project, the organization recruited hundreds of volunteer psychotherapists and created a website that began connecting workers with therapists right away. Within a month, the organization was named by San Francisco Mayor London Breed as a key component of the city’s response to frontline worker mental health. Since then, the FWCP has connected hundreds of frontline workers with thousands of hours of free, convenient, high-quality mental health treatment provided by licensed professional psychotherapists.
