LEAD Uganda (www.leaduganda.org) is a scholarship and leadership program for children affected by AIDS, war and poverty. LEAD locates and selects the brightest and most promising children living on the edges of Ugandan society—AIDS orphans, former child soldiers, abducted girls and child laborers and provides them with an education and a home. LEAD is unique because it sends its gifted students to the top schools in the country and supports them with everything they need for real growth and success. Most education programs in Africa send children to substandard village schools where 80% of the children drop out before 7th grade. LEAD’s students not only graduate high school, but go on to attend top universities in Uganda, where they gain the leadership skills and the confidence they need to help their communities. LEAD believes that training leaders in under-served communities is the most efficient, cost-effective way to promote development and help Africa solve its own problems. Our children have incredible talent but have previously lacked opportunity – we provide that opportunity and they excel! There are currently 128 children in the program, and LEAD plans to add 20 new children each year.
