Jefferson Transitional Programs
Jefferson Transitional Programs (JTP) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that offers vocational, supported living, and educational programs for individuals living in Riverside County, age 16 and up, who carry psychiatric diagnoses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and clinical depression – many of whom are homeless. Our organization was founded in 1990 and incorporated in 1991, as the result of one mother’s efforts. Dorothy Jefferson saw the need for community-based support services, such as housing and day programs, to help individuals stay stable and out of more costly and acute interventions such as psychiatric hospitals. Since 1990, JTP has grown from having a budget of $70,000 with a staff of 3 to having a budget of over $2.5 million and a staff of 54. Throughout this growth, our mission has remained constant “To assist individuals with psychiatric and/or dual-diagnosis challenges in becoming productive and thriving citizens through the provision of safe, affordable housing; development of functional life skills; opportunities to explore and develop vocational options; and promotion of community awareness and sensitivity to the needs and potential of individuals with psychiatric and/or dual-diagnoses.”
JTP operates on the belief that peer-delivered services, that is services from those who have “been there,” are essential to the successful rehabilitation of people with severe mental illness. At JTP’s three Peer Support and Resource Centers, the Art Works gallery, and two safe havens (homeless shelters with drop-in centers) The PLACE and the PATH, peer staff encourage individuals to take responsibility for their own wellness. JTP believes the definition of recovery to be "remembering who you are and using your strengths to become all you were meant to be” – as defined by Recovery Innovations, Inc. At JTP our goal is to create a safe space for individuals to try new skills and take risks in order to learn and grow.
