The Social Work Leadership Institute is a national initiative working to ensure that America's older adults can remain independent and in charge of their lives. Our primary goal is to ensure that America's older adults and their caregivers are able to navigate complex systems of care and gain access to high-quality health and social services within a home and community based setting.
To accomplish this goal, we:
SWLI supports initiatives that expand the workforce of professionals trained in aging care, with a focus on the important role of social work in addressing the needs of older adults.
The Social Work Leadership Institute is a division within The New York Academy of Medicine (NYAM)
Hartford Partnership Program in Aging Education (HPPAE)
The Hartford Partnership Program for Aging Education (HPPAE) is a national initiative that is transforming how geriatric education is taught at Masters of Social Work programs nationwide.
HPPAE's mission is to recruit and train social workers to be leaders in supporting older adults and their caregivers to maintain independence.
This initiative seeks to address the need for 70,000 “aging savvy” professional social workers by 2020. With fewer than 3% of social work students currently specializing in aging, the HPPAE offers a unique training in aging competency and leadership skills.
One of SWLI's primary goals is to build leadership in aging care.
In 2008, SWLI began the Leadership Academy in Aging, a leadership training program to engage Deans and Directors of Schools of Social Work.
In partnership with the National Association of Deans and Directors, the LAA helps social work deans and directors advance educational models and policies that make it easier for older adults to benefit from the services of trained social workers.
We advocate for national and state policies that build care coordination between medical and social services for older adults into public programs that are sustained by a qualified workforce.
Evidence Database on Aging Care (EDAC)
As part of our overall mission, SWLI is building evidence to support a stronger aging care workforce and better care coordination by maintaining an online, searchable evidence-based database.
