About Us

Media Development Investment Fund (MDIF) (www.mdif.org) invests in independent media companies around the world providing the news, information and debate that people need to build free, thriving societies. An innovative, mission-driven impact investment fund, since its founding in 1995 MDIF has provided over $145 million in debt and equity financing to more than 110 media companies in 35 countries across Africa, Asia, the CIS, Eastern Europe and Latin America. These investments have helped build sustainable digital, broadcast and print media companies, including many of the most respected news sources in those parts of the world. Over 70 million people in emerging and frontier markets get their news from MDIF’s current clients. (Prior to 2013, MDIF operated as Media Development Loan Fund.)


Based in New York and Prague, with additional offices in Jakarta, Johannesburg and Mumbai, MDIF is organized as a New York non-profit corporation. With an international staff of 37 from over 10 different countries, MDIF brings to bear on its work a unique mix of investment, media management, technology, and international development expertise.
