Beyond Celiac has a clear mission: to drive celiac disease diagnosis, improve the quality of life for people living with the condition and accelerate innovations in the field. At Beyond Celiac, we work day in and day out to ensure that people with celiac disease can live life to the fullest and eat without fear. We envision a world without celiac disease and work to inspire hope, accelerate research and forge pathways to a cure.  

Headquartered in Ambler PA, Beyond Celiac is a 501c3 nonprofit organization with a national and increasingly international constituency reached through direct programming and a robust online presence and a comprehensive social media program. Beyond Celiac is known for its excellent and timely education and research initiatives, coupled with strategic partnerships and powerful collaborations.  

The staff of 12, aided by expert program area consultants, works to secure early diagnosis and effective management of celiac disease as we serve the 21 million Americans requiring a gluten-free diet as the only treatment for celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity (‘gluten sensitivity’). While awareness of celiac disease is higher than ever, people living with this genetic autoimmune condition struggle to be taken seriously.  

Beyond Celiac works to address this need by serving as the bridge between the community and the researchers with the capability to address challenges through their expert work. We believe in a patient-centered healthcare model that is grounded in science, promotes collaboration and supports a comprehensive approach to health and wellness. We focus on four strategic pillars: Empowerment, Education, Advocacy, and Research. 

More than a decade after its founding, Beyond Celiac fulfills its mission by raising awareness of celiac disease as a serious genetic autoimmune disease – not the food allergy for which it is often mistaken. The organization continues to help the community by maintaining a comprehensive website featuring free resources and materials and its far-reaching social media network supports the celiac disease and gluten-free community nationally.

Empowerment: Beyond Celiac empowers patients to take responsibility for their own health and provides the information and tools necessary to maximize their health and quality of life.

Education: Beyond Celiac educates individuals, healthcare providers and the food industry to understand the needs of those maintaining a gluten-free diet and to support patients in seeking an improved quality of life, beginning with an accurate diagnosis.

Advocacy: Beyond Celiac advocates for access to high quality healthcare, along with gluten-free food and drug safety standards, by providing training and resources to the food industry and regulatory agencies.

Advancing Research: Beyond Celiac is an active contributor to the expanding world of celiac disease research through activities such as surveys, focus groups, data analysis, promoting calls for study participants and collaborating with leading research institutions.

WHAT IS CELIAC DISEASE?

Celiac disease is a serious genetic autoimmune disease. It is triggered by consuming a protein called gluten, which is found in wheat, barley and rye. When people with celiac disease eat foods containing gluten, their immune system responds by damaging the finger-like villi of the small intestine. When the villi become damaged, the body is unable to absorb nutrients into the bloodstream, which can lead to malnourishment.

Left untreated, people with celiac disease are at-risk for serious health consequences, like other autoimmune diseases, osteoporosis, thyroid disease, and even certain cancers.
