Founded in 1981 by Dale Shields (b.1927-d.2003), affectionately nicknamed "the Pelican Man", the Pelican Man's Bird Sanctuary,Wildlife Rehabilitation Hospital, Education and Research Center in Sarasota, Florida, is one of the largest non-profit, wild bird rescue, rehabilitation,release, relocation and public education centers in the U.S. and is totally dependent upon private donations and volunteers. Since its' inception , the Pelican Man's Bird Sanctuary has been able to rescue and rehabilitate more than 50,000 wild birds, returning many back to their homes in the wild. Located on beautiful Sarasota Bay we also are home to over two hundred non-releasable permanent residents
